Challenge
The Lidl Newbridge Distribution Centre (DC) is a new 54,000m² facility constructed on the outskirts of Newbridge, Co. Kildare. This centre will serve Lidl’s network of stores in the Leinster area and create 100 full-time jobs. During the ground investigation, variable soft cohesive and loose granular materials were encountered within the initial 3m to 4m below ground level, necessitating a ground improvement scheme to reduce foundation costs compared to traditional piling or bulk excavation solutions.
Our work
Ayesa was appointed to appraise the initial ground improvement solution, prepare the earthworks and ground improvement specifications, review the contractor design and build proposals and tender returns, and oversee the ground improvement works and compliance reports. Following the tender process, a soil stabilisation solution using lime and cement was selected as the most suitable approach.
We supervised the construction works by conducting site visits and reviewing in-situ and laboratory testing to ensure that the works met settlement criteria and project design specifications. Upon completion, we performed a detailed review of the compliance reports to independently verify that the works were completed to the required standards.
Added value
Our expertise in ground improvement enabled us to recommend a cost-effective soil stabilisation solution, significantly reducing foundation costs. We ensured the construction works adhered to project specifications by providing independent verification through thorough reviews of in-situ and laboratory testing, as well as compliance reports. This meticulous approach ensured the successful and timely completion of the Lidl Newbridge Distribution Centre, meeting all required standards.
